Sue Thome

Owner and Head Trainer of WinterSpring Farm

Specializes in bringing the Dressage horses and riders through the levels in a correct and classical manner.

Sue began riding in England at the young age of five and continued riding after immigrating to the US in 1971. She earned her British Horse Society Assistant Instructor Certificate in the early 1980’s at Porlock Vale Equitation Centre in Porlock, England. Sue graduated from the Michigan State University Veterinary Technician Program in 1986 and moved to Greencastle Pennsylvania upon her husband Mike’s graduation of veterinary school. From 1990 to 1995 Sue was the Dressage instructor at Bit-O-Luck Farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There she focused on young riders learning the basics. Sue and Mike moved back to Michigan and in 1997 bought 55 acres in Carson City that later became WinterSpring Farm. The farm has since progressed from a personal private barn to a full-scale training facility.

Accomplishments:

  • Numerous Reserve and Champion division placings at Waterloo and Copper Creek
  • 2003 – earned USDF bronze medal on Pink Phloyd
  • 2005 – graduated “with distinction” from the USDF “L” Judging Program
  • 2007 – placed 3rd at second level at Region II finals on Czenzi
  • 2008 – placed 8th at third level at Region II finals on Rossini
  • 2008 – placed 4th at fourth level at Region II finals on Rossini
  • 2008 – 11 year old student Kerrigan Gluch was Champion for Training Level Jr at Region

Sue Clinics with Kerensa Muller of Wellington, Florida and Ken McGrath of Illinois. Recent former clinicians Sue has studied with include Fred Weber, Alex Gerding, and Maryal Barnett.

Sue regularly travels to Des Moines, Iowa to teach and train at Grey Horse Farm, owned by Lisa and Jeff Royal and Westwinds Farm, owned by Paula and Dennis Hedlund. Sue’s Iowa students join her at Lamplight and Silverwood Farm shows and will be competing in Region II in 2009.
